Super Mugen Guide

Install Mugen using the file .exe in the directory of your choice.

When you finish installing it, go in the directory where you installed it

You will see this then:

Here a description of each repertory:

- Chars = > Directory where are the characters that you will install

- Data = > Directory data where are configuration files of mugen

- Docs = > Directory where are various tutorials and faqs to help you
to create characters and to help you to install mugen. These assistances
are in English.

- Font = > Directory where are .fnt files. These files act on the
graphic aspect of Mugen such as for example the type of writing.

- Sound = > Directory where are all the sounds and musics that you
will use for your game Mugen.

- Stages = > Directory where are all the stages
that you will install.

Before installing a char, you can notice by opening the directory chars that there is already a character, it acts of the directory kfm. It is Kung fu char.
If it does not interest you, you can quite simply remove it.

Let us come in thus to the installation from a character.

After the loading of the character whom you want to install in Mugen, unzip it with a software like Winzip and place the directory of this character in the directory chars.

For passing at the following stage, it is necessary to check 2 things:

- It is necessary that the .def file which is in the directory of the character has the same name as the directory of the character.
Therefore for example if the directory of the char is chris, it is necessary that the .def file is chris.def.

- It should be checked that there is no second directory such as for example /chris/chris. If it is the case cut the files which are in the second directory chris and paste them in the first one.

Let us pass at the following stage, it is now necessary to edit the file select.def which is in the directory data.

Edit it by using a text editor like notepad.

Remove the lines ranging between [ Characters ] and kfm,
stages/kfm.def.

You will obtain this then:

Then, to add the character, it is necessary that you add simply the name of the directory of the char in a line between [ Characters ] and [ ExtraStages ]

For example, here is the result if we want to install the char chris:

Now you can start Mugen in order to see the result.

If you see the char in the list, that means that you succeeded.

If it is not the case, check that you did what it should.

But it may be that some chars do not work. You can find by loading on certain websites chars for version 2000 of Mugen, those are not compatible with the new version of Mugen.

After having downloaded the stage, unzip it with Winzip.

You will see two files:

Move these two files in the directory stages of Mugen.

Now, open the file select.def with a text editor like notepad.

There are two ways of adding a stage:

- Put a specific stage to a char, for that it is necessary to just put after the name of the character this ", stages/nameofthestage.def ". For example if we want to assign with the character chris the stage flames you will arrive at this result:

-Put a training course randomly, for that you must place in a line between [ ExtraStages ] and [ Options ] this " stages/nameofthestage.def
". Then you must place just after the name of the character who will have a stage randomly this ", random ".

For example if we want to add the stage flames and that we want that chris has one stage randomly (one of the stages which will be in [ ExtraStages ]), you will arrive at this result:

Here, now it is enough for you to check if the stages were indeed installed by beginning a fight.

After downloading the music, put it in the sound directory of Mugen

-Put a specific music in a stage: open the file select.def of the stage in the stages directory
For instance Flames.def, look for the line [music] like this

Write the name of the file in bgmusic and 0 in bgvolume (standard value: if not loud increase it)
Then you get this

-Put a specific music for a char: open select.def file in the data directory of Mugen
Then write this, under [characters] next to the name of the char, "music=sound/nameofthemusic.extension"
Here are the results for instance with kof2000.mp3 for Chris :

Now look at the results during a fight

You could notice that when you fight, there are lots of writings which are posted.

Here like removing them, it is very simple.

You must open the file mugen.cfg which is in data.

Seek the line [ Debug ].

You must replace Debug = 0 by Debug = 1.

Here are the results which you must obtain:

Now, you can see the result by beginning a fight.

This help will teach you how to improve the graphic aspect of Mugen but also to solve problems that some can have like the fact that your screen Mugen is
very small.

To improve graphics of Mugen, you must open the file mugen.cfg with a text editor like notepad.

You must then go to the line [ Video ]

We will start by increasing the resolution, for that replace Width = 320 by Width = 640 and Height = 480.

Then you can modify if you want it the name of color, fastest is 16
thus you can leave like that.

You must then modify Stretch = 0 by Stretch = 1, that allows in fact to put the game in full screen.

To finish we will modify Doubleres, it's the graphic aspect, you have 4 possibilities:

- 0: the default value, basic graphics of mugen

- 1: this value smoothes the pixels with the result that the game is more pleasant to play

- 2: this value smoothes also the pixels but in another way

- 3: the purpose of this value is to return the screen like a screen TV

Mugen enables you to completely change the aspect of your game, i.e. it enables you to change the title screen, the select screen, lifebars,...

We will install a screenpack now

As example, we will take a Screenpack which enables you to place 524 chars, it was created by Duracelleur.

You can download it here

Unzip it with Winzip.

You will see this in the directory then:

You must move all the files which are in the directory data and put them in the directory data Mugen.

You must also do it for the directory font, therefore cut the files being in the repertory font and paste them in the repertory font of Mugen.

CAUTION!

You will be obliged to replace the majority of the files which are in data and font, therefore I advise you to make a copy of these two
directories if there would be a problem.

When you install a Screenpack, the file select.def is generally to
modify, you must thus put the chars of your old Screepack to the new one

When you download a screenpack, you can have another
file, for example music; in this case, you must
place the files which are in the directory music in the directory
sound of Mugen.

It may be also that when you unzip, there are files not in directories.

You will have to do this:

- place the .fnt files in the directory font

- place .mid and .mp3 files in the directory sound

- place the remainder of the files in the directory data

Now you can start Mugen and admire the new form of your game.

The creators of Mugen placed a directory big. in the directory data.

You can find there a file being called select.def:

You must copy these two files and place them in the directory datea, you will then be able to select 60 characters!

That is very simple to install one of them.

A logo is composed of two files:

You must open the file system.def using a text editor like

notepad.

Go to the line [ Files ]

Below, you can see logo.storyboard =, replace it by logo.storyboard =
logo.def

You can now admire your beautiful logo.

You can download introductions on certain websites

That is very simple to install one of them.

An intro is composed of two files:

You must open the file system.def using a text editor like
notepad.

Go to the line [ Files ]

Below, you can see intro.storyboard =, replace it by intro.storyboard = intro.def

You can now admire your beautiful intro.

It may be that a message appears at the beginning of your Mugen if the version is expired, there is a very simple method to remove it.

Open the file mugen.cfg with a text editor like notepad and look for the line [ misc ]

Add at the end this:

Expire = 12,12,2002,fffff827

Here the result which you must obtain:

Mugen allows you at any moment to make a screenshot of your play.

That will enable you for example to make an image of your exploits!

When you are in your Mugen, press on the key F12 of your keyboard.

When you finish playing, you will see that there are new files in your Mugen repertory:

These files are files images in pcx extension

You can rename them with a software like Photoshop.
